Camshaft Installation Advice
- When installing a camshaft, always use new cam followers, lifters, rockers, and pads.
- Protect the cams and cam followers during installation from dry running during startup. Use Molykote grease (MoS2) for this purpose. Lubricate with oil during startup if necessary.
- Ensure that the hydraulic lifters/adjusters have one to two hours to adjust or empty them before installation.
- Make sure that sufficient oil pressure is generated when the engine is started. Insufficient lubrication can cause damage to your camshaft again. Do not forget to clean the oil strainer and oil pan and measure the oil pressure first if necessary.
A contaminated crankcase ventilation system or malfunctioning EGR valve can cause severe contamination of the engine oil, resulting in accelerated camshaft wear and dilution of engine oil by fuel or water.
- Ensure that the other components (valve springs, etc.) are in excellent condition.
- Always ensure that you have the correct components and that all components are properly adjusted (correct valve clearance, proper operation of hydraulic lifters, etc.).
- Observe the correct torque specifications for the bolts.
- Change the engine oil and oil filter. This prevents any metal debris in the oil from causing new damage.
